写大ギャラリーでは『ボール・ストランド写真展／写大ギャラリーコレクション50点』を開催いたしました。
ポール・ストランド（Paul Strand 1890～1976）はアメリカの写真家で、1910年代の後半からアルフレッド・ステイーグリッツやエドワード・ウェストンらとともに、アメリカの近代写真の確立に多大な貢献をした偉大な写真家です。ポートレイト、人物のスナップショット、風景、ステイルライフ、建造物などの作品に見られる、明確なフォルム、トーン、デザイン効果などのストレートで力強い表現は、ステイーグリッツらがつとに力説していた写真というメディアの独自性を深く理解していたことを物語っています。
写大ギャラリーでのポール・ストランド展は1989年につづいて2回目になりますが、本展では、ストランドの60年にわたる写真生活での彼の写真思想や写真表現、写真活動の姿勢などの軌跡をより明確にたどるため、原則として作品の制作年の順にそって構成しました。
なお、この会場に展示したボール・ストランドの作品は、写真誕生150年を記念して1989年に当時の凸版印刷株式会社取締役社長・鈴木和夫氏から寄贈された写大ギャラリーコレクション基金から購入したものです。あらためて厚く御礼申し上げます。
