ロシア人アーティストのヴァレラとナターシャ・チェルカシン夫妻は、ソ連、ドイツ、イギリスなどの“帝国文化”をテーマとして、写真やグラフィック、それらのモンタージュ、彫刻など、展示空間を活用した様々な芸術形式で、長年、制作活動を続けています。これらの展覧会やパフォーマンスを世界各国で繰り広げているユニークな写真家であり、アーティストであります。
写大ギャラリーにおける写真展では「回顧／ソ連からロシアへ―帝国文化へのまなざし」と題して、旧ソ連の1930年～50年代に築かれたモスクワの地下鉄構内の巨大彫刻群、スターリン時代の超高層ビル、経済目標達成博覧会や赤の広場など社会主義時代における帝国文化をモチーフにしています。これらが今日のロシアにおける芸術や現代生活に如何に影響を及ぼしてきたかを多様な表現方法で制作して、作家の思想を強く打ち出しています。この中には今年制作した作品も多く含まれています。
さらには壁面以外の展示として、壁面下の棚には、コンセプチュアルな写真作品を展示しています。チェルカシン夫妻の表現のユニークさが広がっていきます。
展示しました作品は、1972年～2000年の制作で総数94点に及びます。
なお、写大ギャラリーでは、本写真展開催のためにチェルカシン夫妻をロシアより招聘いたしました。現代ロシアのアーティストによる写真展が日本で開催されますことは、大変貴重でもあり、写大ギャラリーにとりましても大変光栄であります。
